fence basics

  • 1–4 days for most yards in Austin, depending on footage, style, and soil conditions.

  • Most don’t, but corner lots, pools, and certain heights can trigger rules.

  • we set our posts 24-30” deep in most areas of town. If you live above solid rock, we’ll use jackhammers to get at least 18” into the rock.

  • Yes. We typically remove the entire fence on day one and then set our new posts.

  • The most durable materials for Austin are steel posts, treated pine framing, and Western Red Cedar pickets, with an oil-based stain/sealer to keep it looking new. Other types of materials are available — we’re here to help you find the materials that fit your goals and budget.

project scope & cost

  • 6’ vertical privacy fences start at $29/ft with basic materials, and can be around $60/ft with premium materials, assuming we’re building at least 200’ of fence. With different style options, the pricing can go up to around $90/ft. Custom styles are also available.

  • How many linear feet your fence is, height of fence, type and grade of lumber, thickness of lumber, and style choice.

  • When built correctly, a Western Red Cedar fence should last 20-30 years with no maintenance, and it should look good throughout that lifespan. Many fences in Austin begin falling apart between 5 and 10 years, even when the pickets have years of life left.

  • We offer all types of gates, from cedar-framed ($480) to steel-framed ($800+) to slide gates ($2,400+). We also build custom gates, large driveway gates, and offer powder coating and gate automation.

Over the years, we’ve learned how to make our gates do what they should — open and close easily, and look good doing it. We can help you choose the right gate for your need. Whatever your choice of gate frame, we’ll build it to last.

installation & craft

  • Fences start to tip for two reasons: 1) the posts weren’t set deeply enough, or 2) the posts grew rotten at the bottom. So, the solution is to set posts correctly from the start (24-30” deep in most areas of Austin), and use steel posts if possible, treated pine posts if steel isn’t within budget. Don’t use cedar posts — they’re pretty, but cedar should be used as above-ground fencing material only.

  • Treated Pine posts are budget-friendly, and they’ll last around 15-25 years. They are prone to warping, however, which can sometimes create a wavy look at the top of the fence. Some style options can compensate for that — like using a 2x6 cedar cap at the top of the fence, which helps prevent the posts from warping.

Steel posts cost more upfront, but they don’t rot or warp, and give the best long-term look for a fence. If these posts are set deeply enough, they can be re-used in the future if the lumber is replaced.

There are 3 main finishes available for steel to get the look you want — galvanized, black powder coated, and raw steel — and some steel posts can be easily covered if you prefer.

  • Yes. We like to use Wood Defender’s oil-based semi-transparent stains, but we offer various brands and finishes of stain, and can help guide you to get the look and longevity you want.

  • Yes. One thing we love about Austin is all the many styles people ask us to build. Send us some pictures or ask us some questions — we’ve likely built something similar before, and can help you dial it in while also guiding you through city code requirements.

  • Yes. Paragon Fence & Outdoor is an Austin-area fence company that also offers outdoor solutions such as concrete work and retaining walls, in addition to fences and gates.

We build concrete walkways, small concrete pads, masonry features, and retaining walls (under 4’ tall), often as part of a larger fence or outdoor project. These solutions help manage slopes, improve drainage, and create more usable outdoor space, while keeping timelines and permitting straightforward for most residential properties.

If you’re looking for a fence company in Austin that also handles concrete work and retaining walls, Paragon Fence and Outdoor provides a streamlined, single-contractor approach.

warranty & maintenance

  • We stand behind our labor with a 1-year installation warranty, and we come out at the 1-year mark to inspect our work to make sure it’s on the right track and make any necessary adjustments.

Some of our fence products come with 10-20 year manufacturer warranties, and we’ll send you details on that so you can register your fence and be covered.

Lumber is a natural product and is not warrantied against natural lumber characteristics (warping, cracking, etc), but we mitigate these possibilities as much as possible through good design (using enough 2x4s to help prevent warping, etc).

  • First, keep dirt and vegetation from building up against the bottom of the fence, and don’t let your landscaper use the fence as a retaining wall (this is very common). Dry pickets = long-lasting pickets. Second, consider staining and sealing your fence every 3-7 years, depending on stain choice. Third, just like with your foundation, you want to ensure good drainage, so water doesn’t pool around the fence lines.

  • For most fence styles, we’re typically 1-3 weeks out, depending on the time of year.
